NAGOYA: Cricket powerhouses India and Pakistan progressed to the Asian Games semifinals without playing a single delivery on Monday after heavy rain forced the cancellation of their scheduled quarterfinal matches.
India, the defending champions, advanced over Afghanistan, while Pakistan moved past Hong Kong, with the results decided by the teams’ world rankings.
Star-studded India, led by Shreyas Iyer and featuring pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has yet to take the field in the tournament. The side had earlier secured a friendly warm‑up victory against Japan.
India has claimed consecutive Twenty20 Cricket World Cup titles and hosts the sport’s most lucrative league. The Asian Games tournament uses the T20 format, which will also be featured at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
India will face either Sri Lanka or Nepal in the semifinals, while Pakistan will meet Bangladesh or Malaysia. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were seeded for the competition and entered the quarterfinal stage.
