Space-based network rolls out as soon as this year, will support video calls

TOKYO — Japanese technology conglomerate Rakuten Group is preparing to introduce a direct-to-mobile satellite communications service as early as this year. Through a strategic partnership with U.S.-based AST SpaceMobile, the company aims to establish a direct competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink network, bringing advanced space-based connectivity, including video call capabilities, to mobile users.
