The Indian Premier League (IPL) trade window for the 2027 season has already produced a blockbuster deal: Rishabh Pant’s emotional return to the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a direct trade that sends left‑arm wrist‑spinner Kuldeep Yadav to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

While fans celebrate Pant’s homecoming, former Indian Test opener Sadagoppan Ramesh has offered a candid assessment of the move, emphasizing the pressure that accompanies record‑breaking auction prices.

Rishabh Pant made IPL history during the 2025 mega auction when LSG acquired him for a staggering INR 27 crore, the highest fee ever paid. His stint with Lucknow, however, was disappointing; the side struggled under his captaincy and finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2026, prompting Pant to step down as captain.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ramesh did not mince words about Pant’s departure from Delhi and his subsequent challenges at LSG.

“DC never wanted to let go of Pant and did not release him even in 2024. They were ready to negotiate and urged him not to leave. But Pant was determined to enter the auction for a higher price, despite DC offering ₹20‑25 crore. He chose money over happiness, which ultimately led him back to DC.”

Ramesh stressed that the inflated price tag affected Pant’s natural game.

“When the price is high, the pressure to perform skyrockets, often leading to a dip in form. That’s the lesson from Pant’s situation.”

Has Delhi Capitals Executed a Masterstroke?

According to Ramesh, Delhi Capitals played the long game perfectly. By reacquiring their former talisman in the trade window, they have secured him for considerably less than what LSG paid.

“DC bid up to ₹21 crore for Pant in the 2024 auction, yet they have now gotten him back for ₹15 crore. It’s a clever move, especially since Pant was eager to return to DC.”

Despite Kuldeep Yadav’s modest IPL 2026 campaign—10 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 10.30—Ramesh believes the wrist‑spinner offers more consistency than Pant’s current form.

“Kuldeep can bowl 336 deliveries in a season, giving him a strong chance to claim 20 wickets. Typically, he averages around 15 wickets per year. For Pant to match that, he would need 450‑500 runs. LSG gains an advantage because Kuldeep’s wicket‑taking potential is higher than Pant’s run‑scoring likelihood.”

This high‑profile trade sets an intriguing narrative for the upcoming IPL 2027 season. Pant will aim to rediscover his fearless batting now that he’s back in his comfort zone with Delhi Capitals, free from the burden of a record price. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav will look to rebound from a tough year and become the strike bowler LSG desperately needs.
