Rare First Edition of Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Found in Oxfam Donation

A rare first‑edition copy of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird has turned up in a donation to Oxfam, the charity announced.

The 1960 first edition was uncovered in a box of American‑language books donated to the Oxfam shop on Portobello Road in west London.

The book has been purchased by the British Library and will become part of its national collection.

Shop manager Olivia Haysman‑Walker, who identified the copy as a first US edition, noted that the book could easily have been overlooked. “There were many books to sort through in the donation, but we recognized To Kill a Mockingbird and decided to take a closer look,” she said.

She added, “We quickly realized we had something truly special.”

“The dust jacket showed its age, with wear around the edges, but the pages inside were in excellent condition.”

“It’s remarkable to think that this volume traveled from our Oxfam shop to the British Library’s national collection.”

“It has indeed been quite a journey, and it serves as a lovely reminder during Second Hand September of the treasures that can be lurking on our shelves and in donations.”

Second Hand September is Oxfam’s yearly initiative urging shoppers to choose second‑hand goods.
