Ravindra Jadeja Cleared for Selection, Bumrah and Washington Sundar Fitness Uncertain

India have received a welcome boost ahead of next month’s Test series against Sri Lanka, as Ravindra Jadeja has been declared fit and is available for selection after recovering from his injury sustained during the IPL.

The senior all‑rounder is expected to be considered for selection when the selectors convene on Monday to finalise the squad for the two‑match series, though final fitness assessments remain pending for Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah and Harshit Rana.

Ravindra Jadeja Cleared for Selection

Jadeja has recovered from a tennis‑elbow injury sustained during the 2026 IPL and is now fit for the Sri Lankan tour.

The 37‑year‑old has been absent from competitive cricket since May and last represented India in the ODI series against New Zealand in January.

His return adds an experienced left‑arm spinner and all‑rounder to India’s lineup, ahead of two Tests expected on spin‑friendly surfaces in Galle and Colombo.

Fitness Concerns Persist for Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana

Although Jadeja has been cleared, selectors are awaiting the final medical report on Washington Sundar.

The off‑spinning all‑rounder missed the third ODI against England due to a hamstring injury and was replaced in the squad by Harsh Dubey. ESPNcricinfo reports that India may initially name a 15‑player squad and consider adding Washington as a 16th player if he is fit for the second Test.

Harshit Rana is also racing against time to recover from a hamstring injury sustained in the England T20I series. After missing both the IPL and the T20 World Cup due to a knee injury, his participation in the Sri Lankan series now appears unlikely.

Nitish Kumar Reddy is also expected to miss the tour while he continues his recovery from a quadriceps injury.

Jasprit Bumrah Expected to Be Available

India are also encouraged by positive news concerning Jasprit Bumrah.

The pace spearhead missed England’s final ODI after suffering an impact injury to his left knee in Cardiff, but the injury was regarded as precautionary, and Bumrah is expected to be available for the Sri Lankan Tests.

Given his heavy workload across the IPL, T20 World Cup and recent international assignments, team management is likely to continue managing his workload carefully throughout the World Test Championship cycle.

India’s Squad Appears to Be Taking Shape

The remainder of India’s squad is expected to contain few surprises.

KL Rahul is expected to open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, while captain Shubman Gill is likely to remain at No. 4. Sai Sudharsan should retain his place after impressing for India A, and Devdutt Padikkal remains a contender.

Rishabh Pant is expected to be the first‑choice wicketkeeper, with Dhruv Jurel as backup.

If Bumrah is fit, he is likely to lead the pace attack alongside Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. Gurnoor Brar has bolstered his case with a 10‑wicket haul for India A against Sri Lanka A.

India’s spin attack is expected to include Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Manav Suthar, while Harsh Dubey could be selected if Washington Sundar is unavailable. Saransh Jain has emerged as a viable option after delivering six wickets and an unbeaten 70 for India A against Sri Lanka A.

Series Start Date

India will commence its two‑match Test series against Sri Lanka on 15 August in Galle, with the second match slated for 23 August at the SSC in Colombo.

The series constitutes India’s next assignment in the 2025‑27 World Test Championship cycle. India currently occupy fifth place in the standings, while Sri Lanka sit just behind in sixth.
