Rawalpindi District Administration declared a flood alert effective until July 6 after forecasts predicted urban flooding in the garrison city. Civic bodies and rescue agencies have been instructed to keep a close watch on low‑lying areas, storm drains, bridges and other vulnerable locations.
They have also been directed to enhance drainage system operations and maintain field teams on 24‑hour standby to safeguard citizens from any potential hazards.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema issued directives during a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) held at his office. Attendees included Additional Deputy Commissioner Abdul Rehman Khan, assistant commissioners, representatives from Rescue 1122, the health department, WASA, RDA, the Municipal Corporation, Civil Defense, PDMA, the police and other relevant departments.
The Meteorological Department briefed the participants on the anticipated monsoon rains and the likely weather conditions for Rawalpindi district.
Dr. Cheema warned that monsoon‑related conditions could trigger urban flooding, surging storm‑drain flows and landslides in low‑lying zones.
He instructed the relevant departments to continuously monitor weather forecasts, maintain an active alert system and pre‑position all necessary measures to respond promptly to any emergency.
The meeting examined the monsoon emergency plan, district‑level institutional readiness, drainage arrangements, storm‑drain cleaning, the availability of emergency machinery and rescue resources, and ongoing surveillance of critical sites.
The Deputy Commissioner called on all departments to improve coordination to ensure swift and unified action during any emergency.
Mr. Cheema emphasized that safeguarding citizens’ lives and property is the district administration’s core duty. He instructed agencies to continuously monitor low‑lying areas, storm drains, bridges and other sensitive locations while enhancing and improving the drainage system.
He also mandated that each assistant commissioner oversee monsoon preparedness in their jurisdictions on a daily basis, ensure that control rooms remain fully operational, keep essential equipment and personnel on standby at all times, and sustain an effective monitoring system to address public complaints promptly.
He stressed that any negligence would be unacceptable and that all departments must carry out their duties with utmost responsibility.
The district administration reaffirmed its commitment to protect lives and property throughout the monsoon season.
