Interest rates are unlikely to fall for more than a year, increasing pressure on the federal government to restrain spending as family budgets absorb four rate increases since February.
That is the consensus among 37 economists surveyed by The Australian Financial Review, with the Reserve Bank of Australia not expected to begin cutting rates until November next year as the job market weakens.
