Regis Prograis has evaluated Conor Benn’s potential to become a world champion after Benn’s decisive loss to Ryan Garcia.
‘The Destroyer’ contested the WBC title last month, returning to the 147‑pound division after a hiatus of more than four years.
After testing positive for the prohibited substance clomifene, Benn began competing in higher weight classes and later renewed his rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr.
When they first met at 160 pounds, Eubank prevailed by unanimous decision, but in their subsequent bout he was outpointed and suffered two knockdowns in the 12th round.
Nevertheless, it remained uncertain whether Benn, even at 147 pounds, could match a world‑class fighter such as Garcia, who ultimately halted him in two rounds.
Consequently, many observers doubt that the 30‑year‑old can legitimately claim another title shot, even if he moves up to middleweight and seeks more favorable matchups.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, former two‑time world champion Regis Prograis expressed doubt that Benn will ever capture a world title.
I’m uncertain of his next move; perhaps he should stay at 160 lbs and take on European‑level opponents.
As for the elite fighters, I cannot identify a credible opponent he could defeat. If financial considerations are paramount, a return to 168 lbs to rematch Chris Eubank would be logical.
I believe that would be a compelling contest for him, and it is likely what will transpire, given my view that he will not become a champion.
Even though Prograis lost a unanimous decision to Benn in April, the bout was contested at a 150‑pound catchweight and occurred when, in his own words, he had reached the twilight of his career.
