Clive Davis, the legendary music producer renowned for discovering Whitney Houston and guiding the early careers of artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin, and Alicia Keys, has died.
David died on Monday morning in New York, TMZ reported. He was 94. No cause of death was disclosed, though TMZ said he had been hospitalized earlier in the month with a respiratory infection and was released on June 4.
Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Beyond discovering Houston at age 19, he nurtured the careers of notable artists including Rod Stewart, Christina Aguilera, The Kinks, Carlos Santana, Barry Manilow, and Aretha Franklin.
Born Clive Jay Davis on April 4, 1932, in New York City, he lost both parents while still a teenager. He later lived with his sister in Queens, earned a political science degree from New York University’s College of Arts & Science, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School, where he began his career in the legal department at CBS, a path highlighted in a 2012 network feature.
He then joined CBS/Columbia Records, where he signed legendary acts such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Boston, and Aerosmith. Under his leadership, the label also attracted major talents including Chicago, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, and Pink Floyd.
After leaving CBS, Davis founded Arista Records in 1974, signing major artists such as Aretha Franklin, Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, Patti Smith, Eric Carmen, and Kenny G.

How Clive Davis Was Instrumental In Bruce Springsteen’s Career
Clive Davis has been integral to Bruce Springsteen’s recording career from its inception, offering pivotal early counsel. \”Bruce and I discussed his debut album (Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.) when he first brought it to me, and I said, ‘Bruce, I love the album, but we need two radio‑friendly songs,’\” the record executive recalled in a 2022 interview with USA Today. \”Rather than being deterred, he replied, ‘I went to the beach and, all these years later, let me tell you, I never would have written ‘Blinded by the Light’ or ‘Spirit in the Night’ without your encouragement.’\”

Davis maintained a high public profile, famously hosting an annual party the night before the Grammy Awards. He also attended the red‑carpet premiere of the biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere in September 2025.
The film features Jeremy Allen White portraying Springsteen during the recording of his seminal 1982 album Nebraska. Davis is portrayed by Paul Chepikian in an uncredited role.
\”When you sign an artist, you feel he is unique; you never know how far their career will go,\” Davis told ABC’s Good Morning America on the red‑carpet of the Springsteen biopic. \”To see the worldwide impact that Bruce has had on people’s lives and thoughts, it’s very touching.\”
Davis is survived by three sons and a daughter.
