An U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, and its two crew members were rescued safely, according to individuals familiar with the incident.
The cause of the crash remained undetermined at first; investigators said it could have been caused by Iranian fire, a mechanical failure, or another factor, according to a person who requested anonymity and indicated that the incident is under investigation.
The crash took place following a period of heightened regional tensions, which briefly flared as Israel and Iran conducted military strikes before de‑escalating, exemplifying the fragile cease‑fire.
By Monday night, the Trump administration had not issued a statement about the downed helicopter when The New York Times sought comment from the White House press office.
A White House spokesperson offered no immediate comment on the incident, and U.S. Central Command declined to respond to a request for comment.
The U.S. military has deployed Apaches, armed MQ-9 Reaper drones, F/A-18, and F-35 attack aircraft in an aggressive Central Command effort to counter Iran’s de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz to most commercial shipping.
Iran has downed roughly 30 unmanned Reaper drones, and several U.S. fighter jets have been lost to hostile or friendly fire since the conflict began on February 28. This would be the first loss of an Apache helicopter in the war.
Last month, Central Command released social‑media footage of Admiral Brad Cooper, its commander, flying over waters near the strait just before the Navy launched a brief operation, Project Freedom, aimed at assisting commercial vessels through the waterway.
The AH‑64 Apache gunship, equipped with Hellfire missiles, ranks among the most formidable aircraft in the region. It patrols the strategic waterway to deter small‑boat attacks and to intercept drones.
However, the helicopters have increasingly approached Iranian‑controlled islands in the strait and the Persian Gulf, reflecting Central Command’s sustained aggressive posture despite intermittent U.S.–Iran talks aimed at reopening the waterway.
In response to Iran’s blockade, the United States imposed its own restrictions on April 13, barring commercial vessels from entering or leaving Iranian ports. Since then, U.S. military ships have turned away 134 vessels.
The Navy has also disabled seven additional vessels that ignored warnings to turn back, including a Palau‑flagged oil tanker navigating international waters in the Gulf of Oman toward Iran on Monday, according to Central Command.
In April, two crew members of an F‑15E Strike Eagle fighter jet that Iran shot down were rescued after ejecting from the aircraft and landing deep within hostile territory.
