The rescue of at least two workers on Friday offers renewed hope to families who have endured loss and fear that the remains of their relatives may never be recovered.

Officials report that over 900 individuals remain missing, though estimates vary regarding how many were trapped in hydropower tunnels versus those swept away by floods. This number represents only a fraction of the more than 5,000 people reported missing following last week’s disaster.
