Rethinking Parenting: The Hidden Challenges Facing Families Caring for Adult Children
Reading the recent commentary on Annalisa Barbieri’s insights, it’s clear that many assume raising independent adults equates to successful parenting. However, a surprising segment of parents still support adult children who remain disengaged from work, education, or training. This often includes those facing neurodivergence, severe mental health challenges, post-Covid effects, or chronic illness. These roles are frequently underestimated, leaving parents to carry immense emotional weight.
Many of us have experienced these situations firsthand. If we value our children’s future, we recognize that supporting them goes beyond nurturing independent growth—it encompasses providing stability when careers falter. It’s crucial to shift the narrative: how do we assist the adults raising strong, capable individuals? By empowering these caregivers, we offer their children a potentially better foundation.
We need to broaden our perspective. Supporting struggling young adults requires us to also invest in the parents who carry their hopes and concerns daily. Only then can we fully address the realities of modern caregiving.
