To date, the initiative has distributed more than $1.67 million across eight nations: Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, and Cameroon. The programme has reached 7,000 players across 387 teams through more than 47,000 individual payouts, spanning over 3,000 matches.

A distinguishing feature of the programme is that pay parity is integrated into its core structure rather than offered as a temporary promotion. For example, in Ghana, players in the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League receive the same per-win bonus as those in the men’s Premier League.

The initiative was driven by the vision of betPawa founder Kresten Buch. Buch approached the Locker Room Bonus (LRB) through an economic lens, addressing a fundamental failure in traditional models: the delay in athletes receiving earned income. The existing system often forced players to wait weeks for funds that were rightfully theirs.

The LRB solves this by ensuring payments are settled on the same day and in the same amount as the victory, often before a player has even left the dressing room, regardless of gender.

“It is not charity in the sense of giving equal amounts of money to everyone,” says Buch. “We are supporting competitiveness by paying the winners. It is an outcome-based payment.”
