After a terrifying trial involving seven victims, Rex Heuermann, known as the Long Island Serial Killer, received three consecutive life sentences for murders committed between 2010 and 2023. He also received 25 years to life on four additional counts. The 62-year-old Massapequa resident pleaded guilty in April 2026, surrendering his right to appeal in exchange for abrupt closure to further proceedings.
During victim impact statements, Heuermann remained eerily composed as families of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and Sandra Costilla shared harrowing accounts of their losses. Vegetarian artist Barthelemy’s sister, Amanda Funderburg, vowed vengeance, declaring, “Save me a spot in hell—I’ll see you there.”
The courtroom’s atmosphere shifted as survivors grappled with trauma. Brainard-Barnes’ sister, Missy Cann, emphasized that Heuermann’s actions constituted a predatory attack on vulnerable women. Vallie Mack’s adopted mother, JoAnn, described the unimaginable devastation: “What you’ve done is beyond words—you’ve never touched her soul.” Taylor’s cousins, Violet Swager and Jasmine Robinson, unleashed vicious verbal assaults, with Robinson stating, “You fill me with repugnance.”
Judge Timothy Mazzei delivered a scathing sentencing. When Heuermann acknowledged remorse, Mazzei countered, “You are a despicable small man—if you are a man at all.” Heuermann’s brief, hollow response only deepened the court’s condemnation.
Prosecutors leveraged DNA, forensic evidence, and 300+ firearms found in Heuermann’s home to build an ironclad case. Judiciary notes revealed DNA matches from a pizza crust discarded near crime scenes, linking him to multiple murders. Phone records showed he taunted victims’ families on a burner phone, further sealing his fate.
