Following an 18-year professional playing career, former fast bowler Richardson transitioned to head coach in 2022, securing promotion during his inaugural season. However, he notes that last year’s championship victory remains a particularly significant milestone.
The achievement took on added profound meaning following the passing of 20-year-old left-arm spinner Josh Baker in May 2024.
“Throughout any cricket career, there are a few extraordinary days that stay with you forever, and that victory was one of them for many reasons,” Richardson remarked.
“It was not just about the club securing a trophy, but also about playing in memory of Josh.
“We performed excellent cricket throughout that campaign, leading to a truly momentous day for the team.”
Worcestershire faces a demanding schedule featuring eight group matches in just 18 days, including a rematch against Hampshire and a fixture against 2024 champions Glamorgan.
The squad will navigate these challenges without Jack Home for a period due to a recent injury, while bowler Adam Finch is temporarily unavailable while representing the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred.
“We have dealt with numerous challenges in this competition over the past two years, including various injuries and other setbacks,” Richardson admitted.
“While we will undoubtedly face more obstacles, this group is incredibly resilient and maintains strong unity, so we look forward to enjoying the challenges of the next three weeks.”
