The comprehensive eight-part series, JAŸ-Z In 8, is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max later this year.

Jay-Z maintains that greatness in art does not require a tortured soul, though he acknowledges the power of transforming personal struggle into universal art. “The pain, you don’t say it’s necessary, you don’t say you need it, but if it’s there — you use it,” he reflects in the trailer for JAŸ-Z In 8, a new documentary series directed by Rick Rubin.

Rubin, who previously collaborated with the rapper on the landmark single “99 Problems” from The Black Album, joins Jay-Z for an intimate exploration of his discography and the songwriting process. The series arrives as Jay-Z marks the 30th anniversary of his debut studio album, Reasonable Doubt.

“Everyone had the same experience, except I was the one that could stand on the soapbox and articulate what we were going through,” the rap icon notes in the trailer’s opening. The preview is set to the sounds of “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” featuring Mary J. Blige, a standout track from his debut record.

Beyond the screen, Jay-Z will celebrate his legacy this summer with two headline performances at New York City’s Yankee Stadium. One evening will feature a full performance of Reasonable Doubt, while the other will commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. Following these dates, he is expected to perform in Los Angeles and Paris around the time of the series’ debut.

JAŸ-Z In 8 is executive produced by Rick Rubin and Jay-Z, alongside Academy Award winner Daniel Kaluuya, with Leila Mattimore and David Rohde serving as producers.
