Russell Crowe has had a demanding 2026, with most of his recent theatrical releases struggling to find an audience. The MMA thriller Beast earned only modest returns before moving to video-on-demand, while The Get Out fared better on streaming platforms, briefly landing in the top 10 on services like Prime Video and Apple TV. His latest film, The Weight, co-starring Ethan Hawke, arrived in theaters to some of the strongest reviews of his career, though it has grossed just $2 million amid fierce competition from larger blockbusters.

Crowe also had a significant 2025 with the release of Nuremberg, a WWII legal thriller that had been a passion project for years. A frequent collaborator of Ridley Scott, Crowe shares a legacy of iconic films with the director, though it has been years since they last worked together. Their partnership reached its zenith in 2000 with Gladiator, a historical epic that won five Academy Awards and grossed over $460 million worldwide. It remains Crowe’s sole Oscar win, while many critics believe Scott was unjustly overlooked for Best Director. More than a quarter-century after its premiere, Gladiator has returned to the spotlight as a streaming hit, exclusively available on Paramount+.

How Did ‘Gladiator II’ Compare to the Original?

Gladiator II failed to match the original’s success. While the first film grossed $465 million on a $103 million budget—more than doubling its break-even point—the sequel earned $462 million worldwide against a production cost exceeding $250 million, falling well short of profitability. Crowe’s complete absence from the cast is widely regarded as a major factor in its underperformance.
