The Dog Stars, director Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller starring Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley, and Josh Brolin, is projected to experience a significant decline in its second weekend at the box office following a lackluster opening.
Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 bestseller, The Dog Stars tells the story of Hig (Elordi), a pilot, and Bangley (Brolin), a survivalist, who uncover a mysterious radio signal that leads them into perilous territory. Qualley portrays Cima, a medic, while Guy Pearce appears as her estranged father, a former Navy SEAL.
Despite its star-studded cast and Scott’s reputation, The Dog Stars earned just $7.7 million from 3,330 North American theaters during its opening weekend (August 28-30), falling short of expectations against its $70 production budget, according to Deadline. The film’s second weekend, extended by a day due to Labor Day, is projected to generate only $2.5 million from Friday to Sunday, escalating to $3.5 million over the four-day holiday period—a 64% decrease from its debut. This would likely see the film drop to No. 9 or No. 10 at the domestic box office.
Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, produced by Universal Pictures, is expected to hold the No. 2 position with $16.4 million over the holiday weekend, while Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its dominance at No. 1 with projected earnings of $22 million through Monday. Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme and Paramount’s By Any Means are projected to rank third and fourth, respectively, with $14.5 million and $8.5 million over the holiday period.
Insidious: Out of the Further, distributed by Sony Pictures, is forecast to earn $7.5 million through Monday, bringing its total to $55 million. These projections remain subject to adjustment as new box office data emerges.
Note: Box office figures will be updated throughout the Labor Day weekend, with final numbers expected by Tuesday.
