Robbie Williams, who has been candid about his journey with recovery and celebrates 25 years of sobriety as detailed in his 2023 Netflix documentary, recently found himself at the center of an internet firestorm. A viral clip from a World Cup interview appeared to show a white substance falling from the singer’s face onto a microphone, triggering widespread speculation.

The incident occurred during an interview with German broadcaster MagentaTV following Williams’ performance at the tournament’s closing ceremony at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19. While some social media users jumped to conclusions regarding illegal substances, others noted that the debris appeared to originate from his mouth, suggesting it was simply a mint.

Addressing the controversy in a new video, Williams offered a lighthearted apology. “It was deeply unprofessional and people worried about me. But it’s OK, because I had several more!” he joked, sticking out his tongue to reveal the mints. The video was shared with the caption, “Just woke up and feeling…. Mint.”
