Esteemed trainer Robert Garcia has shared his expert analysis of a potential matchup between Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney, who have reportedly agreed to fight at a 144lb catchweight.
Both fighters are rumored to be joining Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, with the possibility of their clash occurring under the promotion’s banner.
While no official announcement has been made, the two U.S.-based fighters have exchanged social media comments, including Haney’s expressed willingness to compete at a weight 3lbs below his usual range.
‘The Dream’ secured his WBO welterweight title in November by defeating and narrowly outpointing Brian Norman Jr., achieving three-division world champion status.
However, the WBO has reiterated that Haney would forfeit his belt if he faces Stevenson at 144lbs, as he is currently required to confront mandatory challenger Keyshawn Davis.
‘Honestly, I believe this is a strong matchup for both. They fight intelligently and avoid many errors,’ Garcia stated on Fight Hub TV. ‘The first fighter to make a mistake will be exploited by the other. It’s a tough contest. By a very small margin, I think Shakur has the edge. He’s simply too sharp.’
‘What I appreciate about Haney is his readiness to take that risk. He’d be the one willing to gamble, and that’s precisely where Shakur could capitalize on any mistake.’
Stevenson has solidified his status as a four-division world champion by outdueling Teofimo Lopez in January, earning a decisive unanimous decision in his debut at 140lbs.
The 28-year-old is thus hesitant to face Haney at 147lbs, where the weight difference would provide his opponent with a substantial physical advantage.
