Titans head coach Robert Saleh observed that quarterback Cam Ward’s mechanics appeared slightly rushed during the 49ers game compared to his practice performance this summer, and he offered additional comments on Ward in a Friday video conference with reporters.
Ward completed 2 of 4 for 34 yards, guiding a touchdown drive on Tennessee’s opening possession, but went 3 of 8 for 23 yards over his final two series. Saleh noted that the early adjustment to an opposing defense may have caused Ward to fall back on rookie‑year habits, limiting his time to make plays as he did against the 49ers.
Saleh believes that additional practice reps will build the trust and comfort needed for Ward to excel in the offense during his second season.
Saleh said, “It’s simply as just time on task,” adding that every play he has executed flawlessly in practice requires confidence in himself and his teammates to execute. He urged Ward to set his feet, play with excellent technique, and deliver the ball as he has been doing. The coaching staff will continue to emphasize technique, fundamentals, and high‑level repetitions.
Saleh added that Thursday night’s performance did nothing to diminish the coaching staff’s confidence in Ward’s abilities.
Saleh reiterated, “There’s no doubt Cam is capable; we just need to execute.”
A smoother performance in the upcoming preseason game should alleviate any concerns, and the Titans are slated to face the Seahawks next Sunday.
