Italy has fallen from a historic World Cup powerhouse to missing three consecutive tournaments. In response, the Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) launched a comprehensive rebuilding program, reshuffling its staff. After an extended period without clear direction, the federation has reportedly selected Roberto Mancini to steer the national team’s revival.
According to prominent journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the FIGC chose Mancini despite his contract with Al‑Sadd running until June 2028. He will return to Europe, with only final details pending before the appointment is formalised. The move brings back the coach who previously guided Italy to the UEFA Euro 2020‑21 title.
Mancini is expected to sign a contract through 2030, earning €2 million per year, according to Nicolò Schira. After overseeing Italy at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup, his tenure will be reassessed, reflecting a long‑term strategy focused on rebuilding the squad’s foundations and integrating younger talent.
Although he remains the last Italian manager to win a European Championship, Mancini’s return has met mixed reactions from fans. Many hoped for a radical shift in playing style after recent failures, yet his proven ability to manage projects and squads suggests a smoother, more stable transition rather than an aggressive overhaul.

Italy’s Reported Bet on Mancini Makes Strategic Sense for Immediate Recovery
Following Gennaro Gattuso’s departure, Italy reportedly considered several candidates, including Antonio Conte, Massimiliano Allegri, and Roberto De Zerbi. While Conte and Allegri offered continuity, De Zerbi represented a more innovative option that ultimately moved elsewhere. In this context, appointing Mancini appears to be a prudent short‑term solution for the nation’s reconstruction.
To remain competitive ahead of UEFA Euro 2028, Mancini may choose to refine rather than completely overhaul Italy’s playing system. By tweaking roles and movements, he can craft a fresh identity while leveraging players already familiar with his philosophy, enabling a swift adaptation and immediate competitiveness, thereby avoiding a prolonged transition that could extend the nation’s trophy drought.
