Roger Goodell Signs Four-Year Extension as NFL Commissioner Through 2030

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has agreed to a new four-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the league through the 2030 season, the organization announced Sunday.

The current deal is set to expire on March 31, 2031.

“Throughout the negotiation process, the Committee worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger’s compensation with the League’s long-term interests and success. To that end, the agreement is heavily performance-based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger’s and the NFL’s performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee,” New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, the chairman of the compensation committee, said in a memo sent to teams.

“We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years.”

Upon completion of the extension, Goodell will be nearly 72 years old and has served as NFL commissioner for 24 years.

Financial details of Goodell’s new contract remain undisclosed. He reportedly earned $63.9 million for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The NFL is not required to release annual compensation figures as the league office operates outside the structure of a tax-exempt trade association.

The NFL’s current collective bargaining agreement, which Goodell helped negotiate in 2020, expires in March 2031, coinciding with the end of his extension.

This marks Goodell’s fifth extension since he succeeded Paul Tagliabue as commissioner on September 1, 2006. His previous extensions were in 2009, 2012, 2017, and 2023.

During Goodell’s tenure, NFL team valuations have surged dramatically. The Minnesota Vikings sold for $600 million in 2006, while the Seattle Seahawks achieved a record $9.612 billion valuation this year.

The league has also expanded its global footprint, hosting a record nine international games during the current season.
