Rohit Sharma reportedly engaged in discussions with senior BCCI officials after learning he would not be considered for India’s 2027 ODI World Cup campaign, though these conversations failed to provide the veteran opener with a clear indication of his international future.
According to The Indian Express, the 39-year-old is expected to play his final ODI in Sunday’s third match against England at Lord’s, though neither the BCCI nor Sharma has officially confirmed his retirement.
Rohit Sought Reassurance from Selection Officials
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee reportedly informed Sharma that the team management is shifting focus toward younger players for the 2027 World Cup.
Following these discussions, Sharma reportedly sought further clarity from senior BCCI officials during India’s ongoing England series but left the talks without definitive answers.
India’s Selection Committee Prioritizes Youth
The report indicates India’s selectors are actively integrating younger talent to build momentum for the upcoming World Cup.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has emerged as a key candidate for regular ODI selection, with the management focusing on establishing a dynamic squad for the 2027 tournament.
Form Concerns Ahead of Potential Farewell
Speculation about Sharma’s ODI future coincides with a challenging series against England.
The former captain recorded scores of 11 and 26 in the first two matches, with his 26 off 47 balls in Cardiff reflecting ongoing struggles with form.
This follows inconsistent performances in recent series against New Zealand, Afghanistan, and England, despite earlier strong showings against Australia and South Africa.
An ODI Legacy Without World Cup Glory
Sharma stepped down as India’s ODI captain after the 2025 Champions Trophy, succeeded by Shubman Gill.
Under his leadership, India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and won the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title before retiring from Test cricket post-Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Despite his achievements, Sharma never captured an ODI World Cup, missing India’s 2011 triumph and featuring in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 editions without lifting the trophy.
Until an official announcement, neither the BCCI nor Sharma has confirmed whether Sunday’s ODI will mark his farewell to the format.
