Romanian President Nicusor Dan has nominated Adrian Vestea as Prime Minister following the resignation of Eugen Tomac on Sunday.

“Given these circumstances, I am appointing Adrian Vestea as Prime Minister,” Dan stated in an X post. “Neither Mr. Tomac nor I have been merely engaging in governance,” he clarified. “This decision followed consultations with political parties. However, it is evident that a political resolution is essential at this stage.”

Romania has faced an escalating political crisis since its government collapsed in May after a no-confidence vote against Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) exited the coalition in late April and supported a far-right motion, citing Bolojan’s failure to implement meaningful reforms and the need for a leader capable of collaboration.

On Sunday, Dan described Vestea, a National Liberal Party member, as “pro-Western” and a “diplomatic figure with strong values.” He highlighted Vestea’s extensive budget management experience.

As an EU member since 2007, Romania faces significant fiscal challenges. Its government deficit reached 9.3% of GDP in 2024 but reduced to 7.9% in 2025.
