Joe Root anchored a tense run chase as England defeated India by four wickets to draw the ODI series level on Thursday, July 16.
At Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the hosts recovered from an early stumble to reach the target of 234, with Root producing a composed yet agonizing unbeaten 99.
After winning the toss and batting first, India made a promising start before faltering. The opening pair laid a foundation, but Rohit Sharma endured another lean outing. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer stabilized the innings with defiant half-centuries, adding momentum through the middle order. A sudden collapse followed Kohli’s dismissal as England’s pace attack ripped through the lower order. India lost four wickets for just 15 runs, bowled out for 233 in 44 overs.
Jofra Archer spearheaded England’s bowling with fine figures of 3/47, exploiting the conditions. Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood chipped in with three and two wickets respectively, helping limit India to a sub-par total despite Kohli and Iyer’s efforts.
England’s chase began with early losses, but Root’s composure proved decisive. He held the innings together, rotating strike smartly and punishing loose balls. Harry Brook and others offered support, while India’s bowlers, led by the pacers, applied steady pressure with timely breakthroughs. Prasidh Krishna and co. struck at crucial moments, yet the target remained attainable. Atkinson sealed the win with a boundary off Prasidh as England crossed the line comfortably.
Root’s near-century, marked by class and temperament under pressure, earned wide praise. The result sets up a decider at Lord’s on July 19, where both sides will contest the series. The final ODI may also be Rohit Sharma’s last for India, with selectors having informed the veteran of his status ahead of the series.
