Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris emphasizes that the urgency to win games remains consistent every week, regardless of the season.
However, as they prepare to host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers late Sunday afternoon in the Labour Day Classic, there is significantly more at stake for these longtime Western rivals.
Following a 28-24 comeback victory over Toronto last week, Saskatchewan holds a 7-4 record and sits one game behind Edmonton in the division. Winnipeg, now at 6-5, is coming off arguably their best performance of the season, a commanding 44-28 victory over East-leading Montreal that was more decisive than the final score suggested.
The stakes are further heightened by the possibility of a West team crossing over into the third playoff position in the East, adding extra importance to this matchup.
“We’ve got to gear down to make sure we’re playing our best football,” Harris stated. “My focus is on ensuring we bring great energy, solid execution, and maintain an aggressive mindset.”
Compounding the challenge, Saskatchewan faces additional injury setbacks. Running back A.J. Ouellette participated in practice on Thursday and Friday but will miss his sixth consecutive game. Linebackers Josh Woods (ankle) and Nick Wiebe (knee) have also been ruled out.
Winnipeg is dealing with its own injury concerns. Veteran receiver Nic Demski (ankle) will not play, while defensive back Jonathan Moxey (groin) is sidelined for at least the next six games. On a positive note, star running back Brady Oliveira (ankle) will be available despite being listed as questionable on the final injury report.
The Blue Bombers enter this contest with their highest confidence level of the season, buoyed by their dominant performance against Montreal. Players such as receiver Ontaria Wilson are anticipating the electric atmosphere at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
“It’s just a good, fun game,” Wilson remarked when asked about the road environment. “We know we’re going to face them in back-to-back games, so obviously we want to come away with wins in both matchups.”
The teams will meet again on September 12 in Winnipeg.
