Roy Jones Jr is unequivocal about the outcome of a hypothetical duel between Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Ray Leonard. Both fighters, celebrated for their five‑weight world championships, reached the pinnacle of their careers at welterweight.
Mayweather toppled names like Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, and Juan Manuel Márquez at 147 pounds, while Leonard cemented his legacy by conquering fellow ‘Four Kings’ icons Roberto Durán and Thomas Hearns, becoming the undisputed welterweight champion.
The question of who would emerge victorious in a prime‑era showdown has long sparked debate among fans. Hall of Fame inductee Jones, however, is confident in his answer.
Speaking to All The Smoke Fight, Jones could not imagine Mayweather winning. “People often say Floyd would have beaten Sugar, but that’s not the case,” he said. “Sugar wasn’t just a name; he was a force. Mayweather doesn’t match that intensity.”
Jones maintains that Leonard would have earned the title belt, a belief rooted in his own experience when he bested Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr., in September 1978, clinching a 10th‑round knockout.
