Roy Keane Says He’d Discard His Man City Medals If He Were a City Player

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane stated that he would discard his medals if he were playing for Manchester City after the club was found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations.

On Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed that Manchester City had violated its rules over a nine‑year span from 2009 to 2018 by entering into “sham” contracts with commercial partners to secretly channel more than £830 million into its football operations.

City, which continues to deny any wrongdoing, has won eight trophies, including three Premier League titles, during that period.

Keane argued that the achievements of City’s players have become meaningless due to the cheating that occurred during that time.

Keane told ITV Sport, before England’s match against the Czech Republic, that he would 100% discard those medals if he were a player, adding, “Of course you would; it’s cheating.”

He said they won the titles on the field because cheating was taking place.

He added that the club was aware it would cause significant hurt to many people, yet it proceeded anyway.

Keane’s former United teammate, Wayne Rooney, however, argued that his former club does not deserve to retain its Premier League titles if their city rivals are stripped of them as punishment.

Sanctions have not yet been announced, and City intends to appeal the decision.

A possible sanction could be the club being stripped of its top‑flight titles. Since Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in 2009, City have won the Premier League eight times, three of which were during the period in which they were alleged to have broken financial rules.

Rooney was part of the United side that finished as runners-up to City in the 2011‑2012 season, and he does not want his club to receive the title retroactively.

I’m thinking that their players are doing everything they can to win the Premier League title, and in their minds they believe they have achieved it.

Moreover, if those players lack insight into what is happening above them, and if the same scenario occurred to me—if Manchester United were suddenly doing the same and my Premier League medals were taken away—I would be absolutely devastated.

Even if they were taken away, I wouldn’t want them, because I don’t feel our team deserved that year’s medals—we clearly didn’t finish first.
