U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio disclosed Monday that a foreign government was behind a thwarted bomb plot targeting RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom, characterizing the incident as a “very serious situation” during an interview with Fox News.
Rubio declined to identify the specific state actor involved, stating only that the foiled attack “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” He noted separately that Iran has “openly threatened to attack American interests globally,” warning of repercussions for any such action or attempt. The Gloucestershire airbase, jointly operated by U.S. and U.K. forces, has previously served as a launch point for American strikes against Iranian targets.
President Donald Trump expressed surprise that British authorities released the suspects detained in connection with the plot, telling reporters the United States would not have taken that step. When pressed on a potential Iranian link, Trump acknowledged it “might be” connected but refused to elaborate, saying, “I know the answer. I can be very specific. But I’d rather not say.”
Rubio indicated further details would emerge in the coming days, though he emphasized current operational constraints limit what can be disclosed publicly. “This is a very serious thing,” he said. “And it was responded to appropriately.”
