Rubio Resumes $320 Million Military Aid to Egypt

<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has lifted the hold on $320 million (€284.4 million) of military aid to Egypt, which had been paused pending human‑rights concerns, noting Cairo’s assistance with Iran since the war began earlier this year.</p>

<p>The U.S. State Department announced on Thursday that Rubio approved the waiver “in the interest of U.S. national security.”</p>
<p>“The Secretary’s determination underscores Egypt’s significance to U.S. national security and the tangible security cooperation it offers,” the department stated.</p>
<p>In a letter to lawmakers, Rubio highlighted Egypt’s “helpful role” in the Iran war, noting that the country has acted as a key mediator between the United States and Iran to de‑escalate a conflict now exceeding seven months.</p>
<p>The State Department said the Trump administration will continue to raise human‑rights concerns as part of its broader dialogue with Egypt on all aspects of the bilateral relationship.</p>
<p>“The waiver reflects the importance of sustaining security cooperation with Egypt amid significant regional security challenges,” the department said.</p>
<p>The $320 million forms part of the United States’ annual $1.3 billion (€1.16 billion) in economic and military assistance to Egypt, specifically earmarked for foreign military financing that enables recipient nations to purchase U.S.-produced weapons.</p>
<p>Congress imposed this condition due to concerns about Egypt’s human‑rights record, which experts consider problematic. The State Department has repeatedly cited credible reports of torture, arbitrary arrests, child labour, and severe restrictions on freedom of expression.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, waivers for Egypt have become routine under both Republican and Democratic administrations. The Biden administration, for instance, granted a waiver in September 2024, citing Egypt’s help in U.S. efforts to resolve the Israel‑Hamas conflict in Gaza.</p>
