Russell Admits Performance Gap Hindered Championship Challenge Against Antonelli]
George Russell has acknowledged he must elevate his performance levels if he is to mount a serious challenge for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship, following Kimi Antonelli’s early dominance in their Mercedes partnership.
Russell entered the season as the favored driver after expectations Mercedes would excel with the new regulations, though Antonelli has so far outperformed his teammate. The 19-year-old has claimed five victories from nine races compared to Russell’s two.
Despite trailing 68 points after the Monaco Grand Prix due to repeated misfortunes, Russell has since reduced the gap to 25 points following recent reliability issues affecting Antonelli’s momentum.
Russell’s run of bad luck included a Q3 mechanical failure in Shanghai, a timing disruption from a safety car in Japan, and an engine issue in Montreal. However, Antonelli has also faced setbacks, including a power unit failure in Barcelona and a wheel shield malfunction at Silverstone.
While Russell secured his first British Grand Prix podium with a second-place finish, Antonelli’s issues and a late safety car proved costly. Nevertheless, Russell recognizes Antonelli has remained quicker throughout the season and would likely have won in Spain and Britain absent the mechanical troubles.

“The feeling was good but the lap times were slow,” Russell said about his Silverstone performance. “There were things outside my control that contributed significantly, as were things within my control.”
“If I want to compete for the championship, my performances need to improve. I need to be better and work more effectively with my team. We need to maximize everything.”
“We have a close fight with Ferrari happening, and Lewis [Hamilton] remains competitive too. All of this needs improvement.”
Russell’s early-season reliance on misfortune as an explanation has diminished after acknowledging in Monaco that Antonelli adapted more effectively to the 2026 car specifications. While uncertain if recent events have balanced their fortunes, Russell accepts the championship deficit reflects performance disparity.
“Based on our performances over nine races, a 25-point advantage for him is probably fair,” Russell stated. “He has performed better than me this year and deserves his position.
The exact margin—whether 25, 10, or 35 points—is debatable, but somewhere between 10 and 30 points behind is reasonable given our respective performances.”
