Russia Neutralizes Over 50 Drones; Multiple Casualties Reported in Ukraine

June 22 (Reuters) – Moscow’s air defense systems intercepted numerous drones on Monday, prompting temporary flight suspensions at major airports. The city’s mayor confirmed downing of nearly 60 drones, though emergency services provided limited details about the incidents.

Russian strikes across Ukraine resulted in at least five fatalities, including three family members in the Sumy region. A 13-year-old boy, his father, and grandmother were killed in a drone attack there, with two sisters and their mother injured.

In Zaporizhzhia, a woman was killed and three others injured following a separate drone assault. Meanwhile, an Iskander ballistic missile struck the Odesa region, igniting a fire at an agricultural facility and causing one death and three injuries.

Authorities in Crimea announced the suspension of public outdoor events and restricted fuel sales to essential services, citing disruptions from ongoing Ukrainian drone attacks on energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian naval reports noted a Turkish cargo ship, the Victress, was targeted by Russian drones. The vessel, registered under Panama, sustained damage, killing an Egyptian crew member and forcing eight others to evacuate via lifeboat. Two additional vessels under Palau and Belize flags were also attacked but resumed operations unharmed.

The attacks highlight Russia’s continued targeting of Ukrainian maritime trade routes, which remain critical to wartime logistics and international commerce.
