KYIV, Ukraine — At least two individuals were killed in Russian airstrikes across Ukraine early Sunday, local officials reported, following Moscow’s refusal to heed diplomatic appeals from Germany for reduced hostilities amid escalating tensions with NATO-aligned forces.
During the UN General Assembly in New York, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the initial diplomatic engagement with Germany’s counterpart since the 2022 invasion, characterizing the discussion as insincere. The confrontation occurred amid intensifying aerial confrontations that have shown little sign of abating between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Germany’s diplomatic outreach has strained bilateral relations, particularly after an attempted drone strike at Leipzig Airport in late August was attributed to Kremlin involvement by Berlin.
Frontline positions in eastern Ukraine have remained largely static since the previous year, with Russian forces relentlessly targeting infrastructure using cruise missiles, ballistic projectiles, guided bombs, and autonomous aircraft. In retaliation, Ukrainian forces have conducted cross-border operations against Russian energy facilities and commercial interests.
In Kyiv, a civilian was discovered deceased after a Russian drone damaged a commercial building overnight, while another strike on an auto repair facility required extensive firefighting efforts into dawn hours.
Cross-border attacks in Odesa region multiple times overnight resulted in one fatality and two injuries, according to military administrator Oleh Kiper. Russian forces also bombarded the strategically vital port area.
Lavrov stated that German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul merely “repeated his standard condemnation of Russia” during their encounter. Wadephul reportedly expressed willingness to salvage diplomatic ties contingent upon Moscow’s demonstrated resolve to cease hostilities in Ukraine.
The global community has overwhelmingly denounced Moscow’s invasion through repeated UN resolutions, while the Kremlin frames its campaign as a defensive “special military operation” aimed at safeguarding Russia and ethnic Russian populations.
