Russian Missile Barrage Kills at Least 10 in Kyiv’s Second Major Attack This Week

At least 10 people were killed in a fresh wave of Russian missile strikes on Kyiv overnight, marking the second major assault on the Ukrainian capital in less than a week, according to the city’s military administration.

Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported that 46 people were injured, including five children. Rescue operations are underway at more than 20 impact sites, with residential high-rise buildings struck in two separate districts, Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.

The bombardment comes on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. Hours before the attack, Zelensky had warned that intelligence indicated Moscow was preparing a second “massive strike” on Kyiv following Thursday’s assault, which left 30 people dead.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that Russian ballistic missiles hit multiple buildings across the city, sparking fires in several apartment complexes. Warehouses and a garage workshop also sustained damage.

Images from the scene show smouldering wreckage and charred vehicles scattered across neighbourhoods, while emergency crews continued searching through debris on Monday morning for survivors.

Zelensky had signaled the impending threat on Sunday, stating that intelligence pointed to a renewed wave of attacks. During Thursday night’s barrage of drones and missiles, tens of thousands of residents sought shelter in metro stations as air raid sirens sounded into the early hours of Friday.

Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas in last week’s attack. Moscow claimed it struck military and energy infrastructure in retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on power facilities inside Russian territory. Similar exchanges continued overnight, with power briefly cut in Sevastopol, in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Ahead of the NATO gathering, Zelensky pressed allies to accelerate deliveries of long-range missiles for use against Russian targets. “Any delay with missiles for our air defense… means the loss of lives, and it encourages Russia to continue the war,” he wrote on X.

Zelensky has also appealed to Washington for licenses allowing Ukraine to manufacture its own Patriot air defense missiles.
