A sweeping Russian aerial assault killed at least six people in Ukraine on Wednesday and triggered emergency power outages across parts of Kyiv, days after U.S. President Donald Trump declared an “energy ceasefire” in the more than four-year conflict.
The Russian Defence Ministry described the operation as a “massive” strike targeting Ukrainian communications and energy infrastructure, according to the Interfax news agency.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as ballistic missiles struck energy facilities in the capital and surrounding region. “There are power disruptions in the capital,” he wrote on Telegram.
DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy operator, confirmed emergency power cuts had been imposed across several urban districts of Kyiv.
A strike on a multi-storey residential building in the capital’s Desnianskyi district killed two people, while another attack in the Holosiivskyi district claimed one life, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
The Ukrainian military reported two deaths and six injuries from Russian attacks on the Dnipropetrovsk region, with an additional fatality in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region. Further missile strikes were reported in the Kharkiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the ballistic missile attack on Kyiv arrived without advance warning from Western allies. “Once again, no early warning from our partners,” he wrote on Facebook. “This is absolutely unjust: when they are destroying our infrastructure, and Ukraine is not even receiving early warnings about ballistic missile launches.”
Zelenskyy added that Ukrainian forces detected the missiles only as they approached the capital. He accused Moscow of deliberately violating the energy ceasefire announced by Trump on Sunday.
“A targeted Russian ballistic missile strike specifically against energy infrastructure — the very infrastructure covered by the ceasefire announced by the American President,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “The strike was entirely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale — Russia has never before shown such ostentatious disrespect toward the United States.”
Russia also reported Ukrainian drone strikes overnight. Saratov region Governor Roman Busargin said a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person in the city of Balakovo, home to a Sberbank data centre, a nuclear power plant, and a hydropower station. Busargin said all infrastructure facilities were operating normally.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said air defences downed nearly 500 drones approaching the capital overnight. Russian authorities reported approximately 160 more drones destroyed over the Rostov region. The Russian Defence Ministry later put the total number of intercepted Ukrainian drones at 902, including 180 near Moscow.
