A significant Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight resulted in at least six fatalities and numerous injuries, according to city authorities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that missile strikes targeted residential zones and warehouses, damaging homes, a medical center, and a school. City military officials confirmed five deaths and 23 injuries.
In the Brovary district of the Kyiv region, an attack killed one individual and wounded another, according to Governor Tymur Tkachenko. He noted damage to an industrial facility and confirmed emergency services were working to control the fire.
Ukraine’s air force had previously alerted about Russian Kalibr cruise missiles flying over Kagarlyk village en route to Kyiv.
Earlier, Russian drones struck targets in Kherson and Zhytomyr. A drone hit a minibus in Kherson, killing four, while a Banderol missile struck Zhytomyr’s police headquarters, resulting in two fatalities and over 20 injuries, as reported by Ukrainian authorities.
Kyiv continues to endure frequent attacks, while Ukraine has intensified its counterstrikes deep into Russian territory, aiming to pressure Moscow after nearly four and a half years of conflict. Recent drone attacks in Belgorod and Bryansk regions killed two individuals when they struck vehicles, Russian officials confirmed last week.
Thursday’s attack coincided with heightened scrutiny facing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration. He dismissed senior aide Iryna Mudra by decree amid investigations into her alleged involvement in money laundering, following reports of her home being searched.
On the Russian side, President Vladimir Putin’s regime faces ongoing Ukrainian strikes targeting infrastructure, including Wildberries warehouses, leading to fuel shortages as refineries and storage facilities are hit. Queues form at gas stations where sales are limited. Moscow has begun importing refined fuel to alleviate shortages. A Reuters report, citing industry sources, noted an Indian tanker recently delivered crude, with additional supplies from Asia. This marks a shift, as India, previously a major Russian oil buyer, now sources through sanctioned channels or illicit shipments via Moscow’s “shadow fleet” of tankers, or officially at a capped price held down by international sanctions.
