- This assault follows a series of strikes on other critical bridges, including the Southern Bridge, further destabilising the capital.
- The ongoing conflict, which began with Russia’s full‑scale invasion in February 2022, has primarily focused on eastern Ukraine.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Saturday that a Russian strike hit the Northern Bridge, damaging the road surface and trolleybus overhead wires. Emergency services are responding to the incident, and traffic is currently blocked across the bridge between the left and right banks. The attack follows a wave of drone strikes the day before that damaged the Southern Bridge, which officials say is tearing Kyiv apart. The war, which began with Russia’s full‑scale invasion in February 2022, has largely been concentrated on eastern Ukraine, leaving Kyiv largely spared from frontline devastation. Multiple crossings over the Dnipro River, linking the eastern and western parts of the capital, have been targeted. On Friday, authorities closed the Southern Bridge — one of Kyiv’s main routes — and restricted access to another bridge after a series of fast‑moving, jet‑propelled drone attacks, causing severe traffic congestion. Long queues of cars and buses formed, and some commuters were forced to travel on foot. The Southern Bridge is one of eight crossings linking the two sides of Kyiv. It has already been struck several times since Thursday, according to city officials. Klitschko warned that Kyiv must now operate on a war footing.
