Explosions erupted in Kyiv early Monday morning as Russia launched a significant attack on the Ukrainian capital, coinciding with the eve of a pivotal NATO summit in Ankara.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, set to participate in the upcoming NATO gathering, had previously warned that Russia was preparing for a substantial offensive against the city.
Authorities reported ballistic missiles over the region, prompting Mayor Vitali Klitschko to advise residents to remain in shelters as loud explosions rocked the city.
Kyiv’s military administration confirmed at least seven fatalities and over two dozen injuries from the strikes.
Thick black smoke billowed across the city skyline at dawn, as emergency responders tackled multiple fires and a severely damaged residential building where individuals remained trapped.
This marks the second major assault on Kyiv this week; Thursday’s Russian offensive involving missiles and drones resulted in 31 deaths and more than 100 injuries.
The NATO summit commenced Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey.
