Russia’s Aggressive Border Strikes Target Moldova, Prompting Western Concerns Over Expanding Influence in Europe’s Eastern Flank

As the conflict in neighboring Ukraine escalates, Moldova, which celebrated its 35th year of independence, confronts heightened Russian aggression. National Security Advisor Stanislav Secrieru warned Fox News Digital that Russia’s recent attacks on infrastructure along the Ukrainian-Moldovan border pose a direct threat to Ukraine’s economy and its ability to export goods to Europe.

Secrieru explained that since August, Russia has intensified strikes against Ukraine’s border infrastructure. With Black Sea grain exports increasingly vulnerable, Moldova has emerged as a critical transit route for Ukrainian agricultural products heading to Romania’s ports. In response, the Moldovan government halved rail transit tariffs to maintain the flow of goods.

“Russia’s strategy is to disrupt these corridors, aiming to sever Ukraine’s economic lifelines and pressure Moldova into withdrawing its support,” Secrieru stated. He noted a sharp increase in airspace violations, with Russia breaching Moldovan territory 17 times in August alone—the highest monthly tally since the 2022 invasion.

A Russian drone was recovered by Moldovan police on November 25, 2025, after multiple drones violated the country’s airspace. One drone crashed in the Floresti district, underscoring the growing danger. President Maia Sandu condemned the violations as an attempt to intimidate Moldova on the eve of its independence commemorations.

The photograph, taken in January 2026, depicts the village of Cuhurestii de Jos near the Ukrainian border. Since February 2022, Moldova has recorded dozens of airspace breaches, with Russian missiles and drones occasionally landing on its soil. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the shared plight of Ukraine and Moldova during a joint Independence Day event in Chișinău, declaring, “Russia seeks to corrupt and destroy both nations. We will prevail.”

Secrieru emphasized that Russia’s actions are part of a broader hybrid warfare strategy to test Western resolve. “Moldova’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty remains unwavering,” he asserted. Moscow’s influence operations and military provocations aim to destabilize the region and counter Moldova’s aspirations for European integration, which intensified after both Moldova and Ukraine applied for EU membership in 2022.

Experts warn that Russia’s tactics could foreshadow further escalation against NATO allies. Ivana Stradner of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies noted, “Moldova could serve as a rehearsal for how Moscow tests the Baltic states.” Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna acknowledged the seriousness of Russian provocations against NATO, though Latvia’s Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs maintained that invasion risks remain low. Moldova’s path to EU membership faces growing obstacles as Putin’s regime seeks to block Western integration.
