Ryan Garcia Demands Gervonta Davis Secure a Tune-Up Bout Before Rematch Talks

Ryan Garcia no longer answers to Gervonta Davis. After dropping to a 136-pound catchweight with a rehydration clause three years ago, Garcia now holds the WBC welterweight belt, while Davis is desperately seeking a comeback.

Davis and his promoter, Al Haymon, recently contacted Garcia’s team to initiate rematch negotiations. However, rather than accepting the proposal, Garcia established strict conditions: the bout must occur at the full 147-pound limit, and Davis is required to fight a tune-up match beforehand.

“I can confirm Gervonta and Al have contacted my team. 147 or nothing,” Ryan said on X. “And I want him to get a tune up fight and be at his best when we fight. He has some stuff to handle but we for sure going to get it going on. Let’s rumble.”

Requesting that Davis secure an interim opponent represents a massive power play, treating him like an unranked contender trying to earn a title shot rather than an elite pound-for-pound fighter. Following a lackluster and controversial draw against Lamont Roach—which shattered his aura of invincibility and damaged his marketability—Davis requires this matchup to salvage his ranking. Yet, Garcia refuses to offer him a lifeline.

Forcing Davis into a preliminary bout also neutralizes any excuses regarding ring rust, all while Garcia manages his own affairs. Ryan intends to defend his title in December or January, eyeing opponents Angel Fierro or Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz.

Selecting Cruz would serve as a direct psychological maneuver against Davis. Having gone twelve grueling rounds with Tank in 2021, Cruz provides a stark contrast; if Garcia dispatches him in just a few rounds, Davis will enter negotiations with absolutely no remaining credibility.

Davis is acutely aware that his leverage is fading. He attempted to negotiate a catchweight of 140 pounds, then tried floating 144 pounds from alternate accounts. Ryan dismissed both propositions without hesitation. Coming off a devastating two-round obliteration of Conor Benn, Garcia has no reason to deplete his own physical resources.

After years of dictating the terms, Davis is now the desperate party pleading for an agreement, while Ryan is perfectly willing to let him wait.
