Ryan Gosling’s blockbuster film Project Hail Mary will premiere on Prime Video this Friday, just two weeks after its surprise launch on another Amazon streaming platform.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary premiered in theaters on March 20 before debuting on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 12. The film concluded its domestic theatrical run on June 25 with $344 million in earnings, and with international revenue of $339.5 million, the movie finished with a worldwide box office total of $683.5 million.
Unlike most Amazon MGM Studios releases that typically skip PVOD and premiere on Prime Video’s subscription service 45 days post-theatrical, Project Hail Mary took a different streaming approach. The studio released the film on PVOD first, then made its SVOD debut on Amazon’s MGM+ platform (formerly EPIX) on June 18.
Prime Video announced Wednesday via a YouTube clip that Project Hail Mary will arrive on the streaming service on July 3. The film will remain available for purchase or rental through PVOD and will continue streaming on MGM+.
Viewers without Prime Video can access the service through an Amazon membership, priced at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually. Standalone Prime Video subscriptions cost $8.99 monthly, with an ad-free Prime Video Ultra upgrade available for $4.99 monthly or $45.99 yearly.
What Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ About?
Project Hail Mary is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by The Martian author Andy Weir. Ryan Gosling portrays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher recruited for an interstellar mission to unravel the mystery behind a substance threatening the sun.
During his journey, Ryland encounters a rock-like alien being resembling a spider—named Rocky ( voiced by James Ortiz)—whose planet faces the same existential threat as Earth. Together, Ryland and Rocky collaborate to solve the cosmic puzzle before both civilizations face extinction.
The screenplay, adapted by Drew Goddard from Weir’s novel, stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, and Liz Kingsman alongside Gosling. Rated PG-13, the film earned a 94% “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 415 critic reviews, and an impressive 95% “fresh” audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter from over 25,000 verified user ratings.
Project Hail Mary streams on Prime Video beginning Friday.
