Ryan Moore has been inducted into the British Racing Hall of Fame, paying tribute to the “brilliant people” who have underpinned his distinguished career in the saddle.
The three-time champion jockey, boasting an impressive 230 Group and Grade One victories across his decorated tenure, will receive his accolade during an official ceremony at Ascot on Qatar Racing British Champions Day, October 17.
The legendary Aga Khan-owned Shergar is scheduled for induction on the same day.
Moore expressed a desire to acknowledge those who guided his progression from an initial career as a jump jockey for his father, Gary, to a globally renowned superstar.
“I’m honoured to be inducted into the British Racing Hall of Fame. I’ve been fortunate to work with some brilliant people throughout my career,” he said.
“My family’s support was so important when I was starting out, and Richard Hannon showed lots of faith in me in the early days as well. I’m also particularly grateful to Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien for the opportunities they’ve given me over the years.
“It means a lot to be recognised alongside them and others who have achieved so much in the sport.”
Moore marks the 14th individual inducted into the Hall, joining a list that includes Lester Piggott, Vincent O’Brien, Pat Eddery, Queen Elizabeth II, Frankie Dettori, Willie Carson, Sir Henry Cecil, Sir Michael Stoute, Prince Khalid Abdullah, Steve Cauthen, Aidan O’Brien, Jack Berry and Major Dick Hern.
Shergar, who secured the 1981 Epsom Derby by a record-breaking 10 lengths before winning the Irish Derby and the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, is remembered largely for his tragic disappearance following a kidnapping in February 1983.
The middle-distance star, who was never seen again, becomes the 14th equine inductee, following Frankel, Brigadier Gerard, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dayjur, Dancing Brave, Galileo, Sea The Stars, Stradivarius, Pebbles, Dubai Millennium, Goldikova and Enable.
Sophie Able, co-chair of the Hall of Fame panel, said: “It was the unanimous decision of the panel that Shergar and Ryan Moore are both truly deserving inductees to the British Racing Hall of Fame.
“Shergar remains one of the most celebrated and iconic horses in British racing history, while Ryan’s outstanding career and achievements in the saddle have established him as one of the great jockeys of his generation.”
