Ryan Murphy Completes Script for Potential Glee Reboot, Cast Expresses Strong Interest

Ryan Murphy has finished writing a script for a possible Glee reboot. At the premiere of the new season of American Horror Story, he told Entertainment Tonight that the original cast is highly enthusiastic about reuniting for the Fox musical series, which aired for six seasons from 2009 to 2015.

“Well, funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago,” Murphy said. “We now have a script. Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and I, who penned the first two seasons, have collaborated on this. I’ve spoken with roughly ten of the original cast members. They expressed many questions, but were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the prospect.”

He added, “No one has read the script yet, so the future is uncertain. I committed to writing a few episodes to gauge reactions, especially from the cast, given how closely we worked together during production. We’ll see how it unfolds.”

Murphy had previously hinted at a Glee revival in July, saying, “That show remains relevant because a new generation is watching it. I’ve considered revisiting it. My affection for the series makes me think a new version might be welcomed.”

Glee featured Matthew Morrison leading the New Directions glee club at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. The ensemble included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr., and Mark Salling as students, with Jane Lynch portraying a rival teacher. The series concluded in March 2015, followed by Glee: The Concert Movie.

Murphy has been prolific this year. In July he launched The Shards, an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 novel for FX and Hulu. Earlier this month he premiered the latest installment of his Monster series, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, on Netflix. The 13th season of American Horror Story debuts tonight with three episodes, featuring returning stars Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Kathy Bates.
