Sadagoppan Ramesh expressed dissatisfaction with the limited clarity offered by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia regarding Rohit Sharma’s international prospects following the third ODI versus England. Early reports suggested that the Lord’s encounter on Sunday, July 19, might mark Rohit’s final appearance for India.
Saikia dismissed those reports, affirming that the Lord’s match would not be the last occasion for supporters to witness the five‑time IPL champion representing India.
“There has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” Saikia was quoted as saying by India Today.
Sadagoppan Ramesh, the former India opener, noted that Saikia’s comments still left unanswered questions about Rohit Sharma’s potential involvement in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“The only lines to consider from the statement is the ‘as long as he is in the scheme of things’. They’ve not answered the main question with this statement. Is Rohit Sharma part of your scheme of things in the future? Everyone knows a person has to book tickets to go to a place. But is he going or not is the question? The same applies here for Rohit,” Ramesh said on his Instagram handle.
“A brilliant knock in the Lord’s game will enhance those chances” – S Ramesh on Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma has struggled in the series against England, scoring just 11 and 26 runs in the opening two matches. Ramesh believes the decisive third ODI presents an opportunity for the right‑handed batsman to leave a memorable mark, possibly in what could become his final international outing at the historic ground.
“Performance must be the parameter for anyone’s selection. But India still has a lot to gain from Rohit Sharma is my belief. Thus, him going out on a high is paramount and a brilliant knock in the Lord’s game will enhance those chances,” said Ramesh (via the aforementioned source).
“For Rohit’s sake, a brilliant knock in the Lord’s match will do wonders. It has nothing to do with his future selections or 2027 World Cup selection. It’s just so that a player with such pedigree and ability dictate their own destiny with satisfaction. That’s how it should be and not a decision that’s forced upon him.”
