Sam Kerr Returns to Gotham FC on Multi-Year Deal, Ending Stellar Chelsea Chapter]
Australian striker Sam Kerr has joined Gotham FC on a contract extension through 2030, marking a significant return to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after six transformative years at Chelsea. The reigning NWSL champions announced the free-agent signing Monday, bringing one of women’s football’s most celebrated players back to New York where she previously starred from 2015 to 2017.
Kerr’s move represents a major coup for the NWSL, which has been competing to retain top talent amid growing European opportunities. Across her Chelsea tenure, the 2023 Ballon d’Or runner-up scored 116 goals across all competitions while captaining the team to five Women’s Super League titles.
“This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special,” Kerr said. “The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history.”
Gotham FC President of Football Operations Yael Averbuch West called the signing a “landmark moment,” adding: “Sam is one of the defining players of her generation—a game-changing talent who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football.”
Kerr’s NWSL achievements remain unmatched. Despite her absence since 2019, her 77 regular-season goals still stand as the league record. In 2017, she captured the Golden Boot and MVP honors with Sky Blue FC (now Gotham) after netting 17 goals in 22 appearances.
Her career path included stops in Chicago, Australia’s Perth Glory, and return to Chicago before joining Chelsea in 2019. Kerr made 119 career NWSL appearances across three teams, starting 113 of them.
She will officially debut for Gotham following the NWSL’s July 14 transfer window opening, with her first match scheduled for July 15 against the Washington Spirit in the Queens Classic at their home stadium.
