Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, Sam Neill moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, with his family as a child. He adopted the name Sam at age 12 to avoid confusion with other students sharing his birth name.
Neill began acting while studying at the University of Canterbury, making his film debut in 1971’s The City of No. After early television and film roles in New Zealand, he gained international recognition for his performance in the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs, one of the country’s first films to achieve global distribution.
He later relocated to Australia, where his role in My Brilliant Career (1979) established him as a prominent actor.
Neill achieved worldwide fame in 1993 through Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning The Piano and as Dr. Ian Malcolm in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. He reprised that role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022), also voicing the character in three video games.
On television, Neill portrayed the ruthless police officer Major Chester Campbell in the BBC’s Peaky Blinders.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, he accumulated over 150 screen credits.
His final film appearance was in 2025’s The Fox, and his last television role was in the Netflix series Untamed (2025). Posthumously, he will appear in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort in 2027.
Neill was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1991, later inducted as a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2007, and knighted in 2022 after changes to the honors system.
In his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, Neill disclosed his cancer diagnosis and treatment, stating, “I’m not afraid of dying… I’ve regarded it as an adventure, quite a dark adventure, but an adventure nevertheless.” His legacy endures through his four children and eight grandchildren.
