Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich’s ‘Wild Horse Nine’ Earns Historic 14-Minute Standing Ovation at Venice

Martin McDonagh’s latest offering, the darkly comic and emotionally resonant Wild Horse Nine, premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, delivering the event’s most enthusiastic reception of the year.

Set against the tense backdrop of pre-coup Chile in 1973, the film brings together an ensemble of distinctive performers, with John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits, Parker Posey, and Sam Rockwell leading the cast in this darkly humorous exploration of friendship.

The premiere culminated in a 14-minute standing ovation—the longest witnessed at the 2026 festival—during which Malkovich appeared visibly moved, sharing extended embraces with Rockwell as the Sala Grande audience erupted in sustained applause. The evening proved celebratory for the film’s key figures, with Rockwell accompanied by longtime partner Leslie Bibb, who joined him during the ovation, while McDonagh received support from actress and partner Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who watched adoringly from the audience.

Wild Horse Nine stars Malkovich and Rockwell as Chris and Lee, seasoned CIA partners stationed in Santiago who are sent to Easter Island by their bureau chief, portrayed by Buscemi. Against the surreal landscape of the island’s monumental Moai statues, the pair confronts their complicated shared history. Simultaneously, Chris develops an unexpected connection with two rebellious Chilean students, played by Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas—an encounter that threatens to destabilize both the agents’ friendship and the conspiracy in which they are entangled.

McDonagh has recounted that the project originated from a journey to Easter Island more than a decade ago. Captivated by the Moai statues, the island’s distinctive isolation, and the wild horses traversing its terrain, he resolved to develop a film centered on the location, though it required years to discover the appropriate narrative.

Produced by Searchlight Pictures, the film marks McDonagh’s first major project since The Banshees of Inisherin, which secured Venice’s top screenplay and acting honors in 2022 before earning nine Academy Award nominations.

At Thursday’s press conference, McDonagh noted that he did not initially conceive Wild Horse Nine as commentary on contemporary geopolitics, yet acknowledged that its depiction of covert American intervention has acquired unforeseen relevance. “One of the alarming aspects is that these operations no longer appear to be conducted discreetly,” he observed. “During the 1970s, at least those responsible had the acumen to maintain secrecy, but it seems things are growing increasingly reckless.”

As with all his films, McDonagh wrote and directed Wild Horse Nine. He produced alongside longtime collaborators Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin, along with Anita Overland for Blueprint Pictures. His regular cinematographer Ben Davis captured the project visually.

Wild Horse Nine is among 21 films competing for the Golden Lion in Venice’s main competition. Searchlight Pictures will release the film in U.S. theaters on Nov. 6, following additional festival screenings in Telluride and Toronto. The Venice competition jury, presided over by Maggie Gyllenhaal, will announce the festival’s winners during a ceremony on Sept. 12.
