San Francisco’s Bottom Of The Hill, a longstanding fixture in the city’s indie rock scene, will not be closing after all. When owners Kathleen Owen, Ramona Downey, and Lynn Schwarz announced in January that 2026 would mark the venue’s final year, fans expressed widespread disappointment. The club is now set to continue operations under new ownership.
According to SFist, biotech scientist Michele Bronson has acquired the venue from Owen, Downey, and Schwarz. Bronson reportedly intends to retain the current staff and maintain Bottom Of The Hill’s standing as an independent platform for emerging artists. The venue will temporarily close for one month to complete kitchen renovations and upgrade its website and ticketing system. The previous owners said the overwhelming community support played a role in their decision to transfer ownership instead of shutting down.
Bronson relocated to San Francisco in the early 1990s to pursue a PhD in molecular biology and has frequented Bottom Of The Hill since that era. She has since helped launch or operate five biotech startups. While the current owners will retain the building and its upstairs apartments, Bronson will assume control of the venue space and its name. She plans to handle bookings personally and has committed to maintaining the club’s policy of not taking a percentage of artists’ merchandise sales. She is also exploring the return of the Sunday barbecues held during the venue’s early years.
Prior to the transition, the current owners will host a week-long series of shows at year’s end featuring performances by indie veterans Shannon Shaw, Man Or Astro-Man?, and Mark Eitzel.
