Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Monday that a snap election will be held on November 29, seeking to strengthen his government’s parliamentary backing following the recent rejection of housing crisis legislation by lawmakers. The move comes amid widespread public demonstrations over soaring housing costs across the nation. Speaking with FRANCE 24’s Mark Owen, Javier Carbonell, a policy analyst at the European Policy Centre, commented that Sánchez has opted for “the best moment in a sea of troubles,” suggesting the prime minister aims to leverage the surge of progressive voter engagement sparked by the housing protests.
